ACT 3


[fade in]

TOTAL DARKNESS - UNKNOWN PLACE

Melinda slowly wakes up feeling very groggy.  A hint of chloroform still permiates the air.  She is laying on her side with her hands and feet bound by ropes.  She has the sensation of movement.  Suddenly, there is a jolt and her body lurches forward.  Melinda hears a rattle and then a blinding light hits her eyes.


ETHAN
I see you're up from your nap.
I know that the trunk is know place for
a lady, but I had to get you out of Athens unseen.


Melinda flutters her eyes until they become used to the light.
ETHAN
(cont'd)
Leonardo, help me lift her out.


LEONARDO
Whatever you say boss.


Leonardo is a man of medium build with short, dark hair and narrow eyes. His
marnnerisms are rough and he has a deceitful look about him.
They take Melinda out of the car and stand her up against the rear bumper.  Leonardo unties the ropes on her feet.


ETHAN
Now if you would be so kind 
as to put her in the car.


Leonardo manhandles Melinda into the back seat.


LEONARDO
(leering)
Don't worry Honey, I'll take good care of you.


MELINDA
(afraid)
Oh!  My!


 Leonardo then takes the driver's seat while Ethan gets in the passenger's side.


ETHAN
Okay, now drive north until I tell you to stop.


The car tires squeal and leave a patch of rubber as Leonardo pulls away.
[cut to]

INSIDE ETHAN'S CAR - NORTHBOUND

MELINDA
You'll never get away with this 
Mr. Ford.  Janis will stop you.


Ethan turns around an looks Melinda in the eye, then strokes his mustache.


ETHAN
(cocky)
Melinda please, call me Ethan.
(beat)
Not to worry. Since I own most of the Athens 
police force, Dr. Covington will find no help there.  
Plus I have a couple of suprises waiting  for her.


Melinda falls back onto the seat, feeling defeated.


[cut to]

OLD SHACK - MID DAY

Janis, Xena and Gabrielle arrive at the shack where Janis has supplies and transportation waiting.   She goes into the car and removes two packages wrapped 
in brown paper, tied with string.


JANIS
Here, I brought you some 
clothes so you'll blend in.


GABRIELLE
(humorously)
You mean breastplates and
gauntlets ar no longer in style?


JANIS
You two go get changed
while I get the car started.


[cut to]

INSIDE THE SHACK - CURRENT

Xena and Gabrielle open the packages and begin to get dressed.  As Gabrielle pulls on her jodhpurs, a confused look comes over her face.


GABRIELLE
Xena, what is this?


She points to the zipper fly.


XENA
Your guess is as good as mine.


Xena bends down to examine it closer.  Then she takes the tab and pulls it up, zipping it closed.
GABRIELLE
Cool!


XENA
No, cool would have been if
we didn't figure out what it did.


They both laugh as they continue to get dressed.


Xena eyes Gabrielle from head to toe, just as she finishes lacing up her boots.


GABRIELLE
What's wrong?


XENA
If you didn't have short hair, you
could pass for Janis in that get up.


GABRIELLE
(smiling)
Got a cigar?


Janis enters the shack just as Xena is holstering her bullwhip and chakram.


JANIS
Are you ready?


GABRIELLE
All set.
What's the plan?


JANIS
We'll go back to my apartment in Athens.
That's where Ethan took Melinda from.
Maybe there's something I missed and
we'll get a clue as to where he's taking her.


As Janis, Xena and Gabrielle exit the shack, they see five thugs standing by the car.


HEAD THUG
(nasty)
Which one of you is Dr. Covington?
Janis steps off the porch.


JANIS
(leering)
Who wants to know?


HEAD THUG
We do.
We're the welcoming committee.


JANIS
What do you want?


HEAD THUG
Just a few moments of your time.


As the men move toward Janis, Xena comes off the porch and stands in front of her.


XENA
I don't think you really want to do this.


HEAD THUG
(sarcastically laughing)
So Dr. Covington, who's 
your Amazon friend?


Gabrielle steps off the porch and stands next to Xena.


GABRIELLE
(cocky)
Sir, you must be mistaken. I'm the Amazon.
In fact, an Amazon Queen.


The head thug runs out of patience.


HEAD THUG
GET THEM!


The thugs storm Janis, Xena and Gabrielle, who immediately take defensive postures. Xena grabs two of the thugs and cracks their heads together, sending 
them to the ground.  Gabrielle executes a back spin, round house kick, which 
sends another thug sailing through the air.  Janis unholsters her bullwhip, cocks 
it and lets it fly, wrapping it around the neck of one of the thugs.  She recoils it, 
which sends the man twirling and crashing into the head thug.

The men regroup for round two.  As they come back for more, Xena's eyes light up with fire and a sinister grin comes over her face.


XENA
Come on boys, that was just a warm up.


She let's out a war cry, unholsters her chakram and throws it toward the group of thugs.  It ricochets of each one of their foreheads, sending them all to the ground.
SMART THUG
Let's get out of here.  She's crazy.


Four of the thugs turn tail and run leaving the head thug still on the ground trying to regain his falculties.  Xena kneels down next to him and thrusts the first two fingers of each hand into the left side of the thug's neck.


XENA
I've just cut off the flow of blood to your brain.
Talk or you'll be dead in seconds.
Blood starts to trickle from the thug's nose.
Janis and Gabrielle stand in the distance and observe.


JANIS
(to Gabrielle as Xena questions the thug)
What is she doing?


GABRIELLE
She's using pressure points to get him 
to talk.  I call it a "pinch interrogation".


HEAD THUG
(laboring)
What do you want to know?


XENA
Who sent you?


HEAD THUG
Ethan Ford.


XENA
Why?


HEAD THUG
He told us to stop Dr. Covington
from following him.


Xena motions for Janis to come over.


XENA
Anything you want to ask?


Janis leans down and gets right in the thug's face.


JANIS
Where has he taken Melinda Pappas?


HEAD THUG
(choking)
I don't know.


Janis steps back and Xena releases the pinch.  Then she knocks the thug out.


XENA
Let's go.


GABRIELLE
Right behind you.


When they get to the car, Xena circles it cautiously.  She kicks the tires and rocks it.


XENA
Where do you hitch the horses?


Janis tries not to smile.


JANIS
This is called an automobile or car
for short.  You don't need horses
to move it.  It runs on a liquid called
gasoline, which is similar to greek 
fire.  Now just trust me and get in.


Janis opens the door on the passenger's side.  Xena gets in the front seat while Gabrielle crawls in the back.  Janis takes the driver's position.  She puts the car in gear and pulls away, heading for Athens. 
[cut to]

INSIDE THE CAR - ONE HOUR LATER

As she turns around to say something,  Xena observes that Gabrielle is a sickening shade of green.


XENA
(concerned)
What's wrong Gabrielle?
I haven't seen you look like that
since our sea voyage with
Uylsses to Ithaca.


Janis looks at Gabrielle in the rear view mirror.


JANIS
It's called motion sickness.
Some people get it when
traveling by boat, car or plane.


GABRIELLE
W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L.


XENA
What's a plane?


Janis pauses.


JANIS
A plane is machine that  fl...


Janis stops in mid sentence.


JANIS
(cont'd)
Maybe we'd better explore 
that one another day.


Xena takes Gabrielle's forearm and squeezes hard on the tendons at the under side of her wrist, then she cups Gabrielle's cheek in an attempt to comfort her.


XENA
There you go. 
That'll make you feel better soon.



GABRIELLE
Thanks Xena.


Janis looks over to Xena.


JANIS
Pressure points again?


Xena looks puzzled.


XENA
(cautiously)
How do you know about pressure points?


JANIS
Gabrielle told me about them while 
you were putting the pinch on that thug.


XENA
"The Pinch"  aay.


Xena turns around and eyes Gabrielle.  Gabrielle schrugs her shoulders and smiles innocently.


[cut to]

JANIS' ATHENS APARTMENT BUILDING - LATE EVENING

Janis stops the car at the front of her apartment building and everyone gets out.  They walk inside and up three flights of stairs.  When they get to Janis' door, they find it ajar. Janis slowly pushes it open.  As they start to enter, they hear something moving towards the back.


JANIS
Someone's in here.
