LOGAN AIRPORT - SPRING OF 1941
It is just before dusk as Melinda and Janis board the plane. Their destination, Greece. The liner holds 21 passengers in its slender, cramped compartment.
Janis, a veteran flyer, nestles down in her seat after stowing her duffel bag. This is Melinda's first time flying. Her nervousness is not well hidden, as she cautiously sits down.
Isn't this exciting Janis?
Janis' frowns and adjusts her position in the seat.
Make yourself comfortable because
it's going to be a long trip.
Melinda smiles and leans over Janis to look out the window.
Look, you can see the ocean.
Get used to that site because we're
going to be flying over it for a long time.
Melinda suddenly becomes flushed and her knuckles turn white from the grip she has on the arm of the chair.
Relax... Everythings going to be just fine.
Haven't you ever flown before?
No. This is my first time.
How did you get to Macedonia last year?
Just then the steward comes down the aisle with refreshments.
Can I offer you something to drink?
A cup of tea would be nice.
We'll both have bourbon
and make her's a double.
Just as the steward serves the drinks an announcement comes over the loud speaker.
This is your Captain speaking.
We will be taking off in about
5 minutes. Everyone be seated
and fasten your safety belts.
Shortly after the announcement, the engines rev up and the plane starts to vibrate. Melinda, who has been sipping her drink, swallows the remainder in one gulp.
The plane taxis out onto the strip and then is off like a shot, down the runway.
Melinda sinks back into her chair, closes her eyes tight and clutches Janis' arm.
Suddenly, they are airborne and the plane climbs to cruising altitude, which takes about 15 minutes.
Melinda, you can let go of my arm now.
Are we there yet?
No... But I really think you need to relax.
Janis signals for the steward to come over.
She'll have another bourbon.
The steward brings Melinda another drink and she swallows it almost as fast as the first one.
Shortly there after, the alcohol takes effect and Melinda becomes very relaxed and sleepy.
PASSENGER CABIN - 1 HOUR INTO THE FLIGHT
I think I'll do a little more reserch before we land.
Janis opens her duffel bag, pulling out a brown leather journal and a pen.
Melinda, give me the scroll.
Melinda, very light headed, turns to Janis.
I don't have it!
