SWIMMING HOLE - DAYBREAK

It is a quiet summer morning as Xena takes a leisurely swim.  A fine mist rises, as cool air and warm water meet.  She gently glides across the surface on her back, without making a sound.  Xena's gracefulness in the water is equal to her cat-like movements on land.  Suddenly, she ducks under and when she resurfaces, she
has a large fish in her hands, which will soon become breakfast.  Tossing it up
onto shore, she resumes her backstroke. The serenity of the moment is interrupted
by movement on shore.

GABRIELLE
(impatient)
If you stay in there any longer,
you're going to grow gills.

Gabrielle, long since exiting the water, has been patiently waiting for breakfast to be captured.

XENA
(playfully)
Well, I am starting to feel a little scaley.

GABRIELLE
Don't let me interrupt then.  Just bury me when
you get out because I'll be dead of starvation.

Xena gives Gabrielle a look of confidence.

XENA
Now would I ever let that happen?
(beat)
Look.

Xena points to the place where she tossed the fish, which is now on its final flop before giving up the ghost.

GABRIELLE
(sarcastically)
My hero.

Gabrielle picks up the fish and starts to walk back to the campfire.

GABRIELLE
(cont'd)
I'll call you when breakfast is ready.

XENA
Take your time.

Xena continues her back float.

A short time later, she hears Gabrielle's voice in the distance.

GABRIELLE
(shouting)
Breakfast is ready.

Xena reluctantly exits the water, puts on her leathers and starts toward the campsite.

CAMPSITE - BREAKFAST

Xena and Gabrielle sit down and begin to consume the tasty morsels of trout.

XENA
Gabrielle, you cook
almost as good as you write.

GABRIELLE
Such high praise so
early in the morning?

XENA
I guess a nice long swim and a good
meal make me one contented warrior.

GABRIELLE
Note to self: calm waters plus
good food equals compliment.

Xena just smiles as she reclines against a log and finishes the last bites of
breakfast.  They let the morning drift by as they stay by the fire and talk.

There is a pause in the conversation and then Xena observes Gabrielle deep in thought.

XENA
What are you thinking about?

GABRIELLE
If there was one thing you could
change about your life, what would it be?

Xena, concluding that Gabrielle is in one of her analytical moods, takes the opportunity to play with her.  She leans back further against the log and looks up to the sky, with a pondering expression on her face.

XENA
Remember the Battle of the Bands contest with Draco
and I won? Well I'm sorry I didn't keep the lyre because
I secretly have always wanted to be a Rock Star.

Gabrielle rolls her eyes.

GABRIELLE
(annoyed but amused)
You know, sometimes I think the word
"serious" is not in your vocabulary when we're alone.
Why aren't you like this around other people?

XENA
It's all you Gabrielle.
You bring out the court jester in me.

Gabrielle pauses for a moment.

GABRIELLE
I guess I'll take that as a
(beat)
COMPLIMENT?

Xena has a look of conquest.

XENA
Okay, what about you, oh great and
powerful bard?  What would you change?

Gabrielle stirs the embers of the fire, as an expression of contentment comes over her face.

GABRIELLE
Nothing.

Xena looks puzzled, still not understanding why the subject came up in the first place.  But she has long since accepted the complexity of her best friend.

As they finally decide it's time to get moving, in the distance they hear a voice yelling to them.

 DISTANT VOICE
    Xena, Gabrielle,
thank goodness I found you.

They look up to the top of a cliff and see a figure waving.   Then the form collapses.
